Avian migration is ramping up with huge fallout in Texas!

Last week at Mad Island, TX, researchers from the Smithsonian’s Migratory Bird Center were kept busy as they caught hundreds of migrating passerines.  In a single day they caught over 300 birds in just four mist nets! Meanwhile, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology had their biggest Big Day ever in Texas, breaking previous records by 30 species. Spring has definitely arrived!

This is the second spring of Smithsonian research at Mad Island where a number of questions are under investigation, including linking wintering and breeding locations to individuals on the Central Flyway. Check out the Mad Island blog and keep up to date with their ongoing research…
