Job opening for bird education specialist at the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center in Washington, DC
The Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center and the National Zoo in Washington, DC are planning an exciting new bird exhibit called “Experience Migration” which is due to open spring of 2021. In addition to lively aviaries representing habitats across the Western Hemisphere that are vital to the survival of migratory birds, this exhibit will house a discovery room highlighting the science behind and reasons for tracking migratory animals. Through participation in bird banding demonstrations, hands-on activities and displays featuring the latest tracking technologies, visitors to the discovery room will learn first-hand how scientists study birds and track their movements across the globe. They’ll also see how information gained through this research leads to more effective conservation efforts. Tracking technologies that may be highlighted include satellite telemetry, archival geolocators, and radar imagery.

1) lead the establishment of an on-site bird banding program at the National Zoo which will offer regularly scheduled demonstrations for school groups and the general public;
2) assist with the creation of and provide the content expertise for a secondary- school curriculum inspired by SMBC bird tracking data;
3) and assist with the development of displays and informal educational programming that will activate the visitor experience in the discovery room.
To be considered for this position, candidates MUST have considerable experience with mist-netting and banding birds, as well as well-rounded knowledge of birds, migration, tracking technologies, and relevant conservation issues. Also required are excellent oral and written communication skills, and the ability to work independently and as a team member. Strong candidates will have experience doing bird banding demonstrations with the public, and interpreting science for lay audiences. A Bachelor’s degree in biology is mandatory and an advanced degree is preferred. A valid driver’s license is required.
