10 December: Tracking insect migration with radar

Chapman et al. 2011

Vertical-looking entomological radar, including time/height plot of insect numbers and simulated migration trajectories. See Chapman et al. (2011) for more information.

A recent paper in Annu. Rev. Entomol. gave a nice review of the use of radar for tracking insect movement. Two newer methods, Vertical Looking Radar and Harmonic Radar, have combined with computing software to greatly advance the level of detail that researchers are able to glean from this 40-year-old tool.
